Juvenile Justice Counselor

Alaska’s Juvenile Justice Counselors have a unique opportunity to make a real differe​nce in the lives of youth in our 24-hour secure treatment and detention facilities. As part of a multidisciplinary team, Juvenile Justice Counselors play a key role in implementing restorative justice programming that prioritizes accountability, community safety, and rehabilitation.

  • Provides individual and group-based activities that focus on life skills and anger management, substance abuse education, and positive behavior change.
  • Ensures a structured, safe and secure environment.
  • Fosters collaborative, supportive relationships with youth to guide them toward long-term success.

Juvenile Probation Officer

Alaska’s Juvenile Probation Officers play a vital role in promoting community safety, victim restoration and helping young people chart a better path forward.

They manage diverse and often challenging caseloads in urban and rural communities and provide critical input to the courts regarding youth accountability and restorative justice through written reports and testimony. The juvenile probation officer promotes positive outcomes for justice involved youth through:

  • Structured community supervision,
  • Individualized, strength-based case planning,
  • Conducting assessments and investigations,
  • Collaborating with families, schools, social service agencies, and community partners to create supportive networks and resources for each young person.

Support Positions

The Division’s Juvenile Justice Counselors and Probation Officers are supported by a diverse team of support staff that further promote the Division’s mission of holding juvenile offenders accountable, promoting the safety and restoration of victims and communities, and assisting youth offenders and their families in developing skills to prevent future crime.

Additional positions that make up the Juvenile Justice team include:

  • Administrative staff,

  • Facility nurses, and
  • Mental health clinicians and occupational therapists.
