Johnson Youth Center
About
The Johnson Youth Center (JYC) houses a co-ed eight-bed detention unit and the ten-bed Girls Treatment Unit (GTU). GTU offers individualized treatment and structured groups for adjudicated female offenders with an emphasis on trauma-informed care and strength-based programming.
Visiting
The Johnson Youth Center is located at 3252 Hospital Drive, Juneau, Alaska 99801. Visiting is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. and Saturdays from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Hours are subject to change without notice. Please contact the facility to verify when planning to visit.
Visiting Guidelines
- Visitors will be limited to four approved visitors per resident.
- Visitors under the age of 18 must be pre-approved by the JJUS and accompanied by an authorized adult with a valid ID.
- Visitors are not authorized to bring in any items during visiting unless approved by the JJUS prior to visitation.
- Unauthorized items received during visiting will be considered contraband and confiscated.
- At no time should any notes, letters, or mail be passed to or from visitors.

- Probation Officers
- Clergy *
- Any Unit Supervisor-approved party
* Allowed to visit at any reasonable time
Who May Not Visit?
- Any individual who has been released from JYC within the last 60 days.
- Any visitor who has been found in violation of Visiting Guidelines.
- Persons on felony probation without the permission of both the Superintendent and their probation officers.
- Persons suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The Superintendent, Unit Supervisor, and JPO shall have final authority in determining who may not visit.
What to Expect During Visiting
- All visitors entering the Detention Unit are subject to search by a metal detector.
- A state-issued photo ID must be presented when visiting.
- Personal items are prohibited. Purses, cell phones, and other personal items should be left in a car or secured in the lockers provided.
- Visitors and their children are expected to behave in an orderly and respectful manner. Should visiting become unruly, visiting can be canceled.
- Food and drinks must have prior approval before being brought to visiting.
Special Visits
A “Special Visit” is a rare, special situation for out-of-town visitors or for special circumstances and requires prior approval from the Unit Supervisor.
