About

The Bethel Youth Facility (BYF) consists of a twelve-bed co-ed detention and an eight-bed male treatment unit. BYF’s treatment unit specializes in providing secure treatment to youth with neuro-behavioral issues, many of whom suffer from severe trauma and abuse. Cultural programming is utilized to teach youth traditional and currently applicable skills, such as moose and fish camps.

Visiting

BYF is located at 950 State Hwy, Bethel, Alaska 99559. Visiting is available on Tuesdays from 7 to 8 P.M. and Saturdays from 2 to 3 P.M. Hours are subject to change without notice. Please contact the facility to verify when planning to visit.

Visiting Guidelines

  • Visiting will be limited to two approved visitors per resident.
  • Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an authorized adult and provide prior notification to facility staff.
  • Books, appropriate magazines, small table games, and commercially wrapped goods will be screened if brought in during visiting.
  • Unauthorized items received during visiting will be considered contraband and confiscated.
  • At no time should any notes, letters, or mail be passed to or from visitors.
  • Residents on Room Confinement or Disciplinary Orientation may be denied visitation and gifts.

  • Guardians ad Litem
  • Attorneys *
  • Probation Officers
  • Clergy *
  • Any Unit Supervisor-approved party

* Allowed to visit at any reasonable time

Who May Not Visit

  • Any individual who has been released from BYF within the last 60 days.
  • Any visitor who has been found in violation of Visiting Guidelines.
  • Persons on felony probation without the permission of both the Superintendent and their probation officers.
  • Persons suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

What to Expect During Visiting

  • All visitors are subject to search by a metal detector.
  • Personal items are prohibited. Purses, cell phones, and other personal items should be left in a car or secured in the lockers provided.
  • Visitors and their children are expected to behave in an orderly and respectful manner. Should visiting become unruly, visiting can be canceled.
  • Traditional Alaska Native foods are approved on a case by case basis. 

Special Visits

  • A “Special Visit” is generally reserved for out-of-town visitors, or for special circumstances and requires approval from the Unit Supervisor.
