The Office of Children's Services (OCS) collects data on children and families referred for child protective services and on providers for out-of-home placements.

Statistical information is posted to this page by the 15th of each month in accordance with: Alaska Statutes Sec. 47.05.100, Monthly reports concerning children.


Protective Service Reports Screened during May 2026

  • 1,891 Protective Service Reports were screened,
  • 482 Protective Service Reports were screened in (25%)
  • 1,409 Protective Service Reports were screened out

Initial Assessments Completed during May 2026

  • 495 Initial Assessments were completed,
  • 124 Initial Assessments were Substantiated (25%),
  • 371 Initial Assessments were Not Substantiated (includes Closed without a Finding).

Children in Out-of-home care during May 2026

Please note that due to administrative processing, there may be a significant lag for entry of discharge data into ORCA, which may affect reporting accuracy for recent months.

  • 2,401 Children were in Out-of-home care during the month; of these children 1,667 were Alaskan Native/American Indian (69%)
  • 82 children were removed from their home; 56 of these were Alaskan Native/American Indian (68%),
  • 54 children were discharged from Out-of-Home care; 41 of these were Alaskan Native/American Indian (76%)

Providers who were Licensed during May ​2026

There were 1,161 licensed homes during all or part of the month, including the following:

  • 647 Non-Child-Specific Foster Homes (107 of which identify as Alaska Native or American Indian),
  • 451 Child-Specific Foster Homes, (170 of which identify as Alaska Native or American Indian),
  • 16 Child Placement Agencies,
  • 29 Residential Child Care Facilities,
  • 17 Residential Psychiatric Treatment Centers,
  • 1 Maternity Homes,
  • 0 Tribal Foster Homes,
  • 0 Independent Living Programs,
  • 0 Assisted Living Facilities.
