Alaska Office of Children's Services Statistical Information

The Office of Children's Services (OCS) collects data on children and families referred for child protective services and on providers for out-of-home placements.

Statistical information is posted to this page by the 15th of each month in accordance with: Alaska Statutes Sec. 47.05.100, Monthly reports concerning children.

The following data was harvested from the OCS ORCARPT database on January 11, 2023.


Protective Service Reports Screened during January 2024

  • 1,729 Protective Service Reports were screened,
  • 521 Protective Service Reports were screened in (30%)
  • 1,208 Protective Service Reports were screened out

Initial Assessments Completed during January 2024

  • 470 Initial Assessments were completed,
  • 142 Initial Assessments were Substantiated (30%),
  • 328 Initial Assessments were Not Substantiated (includes Closed without a Finding).

Children in Out-of-home care during January 2024

Please note that due to administrative processing, there may be a significant lag for entry of discharge data into ORCA, which may affect reporting accuracy for recent months.

  • 2,635 Children were in Out-of-home care during the month; of these children 1,816 were Alaskan Native/American Indian (69%)
  • 92 children were removed from their home; 52 of these were Alaskan Native/American Indian (57%),
  • 34¬†children were discharged from Out-of-Home care; 24 of these were Alaskan Native/American Indian (71%)

Providers who were Licensed during January 2024

There were 1,240 licensed homes during all or part of the month, including the following:

  • 625 Non-Child-Specific Foster Homes (90 of which met the standard for the Indian Child Welfare Act),
  • 514 Child-Specific Foster Homes,
  • 27 Non-Child-Specific Foster Group Homes (3 of which met standards for the Indian Child Welfare Act),
  • 5 Child-Specific Foster Group Homes,
  • 12 Child Placement Agencies,
  • 30 Residential Child Care Facilities,
  • 25 Residential Psychiatric Treatment Centers,
  • 2 Maternity Homes,
  • 0 Tribal Foster Homes,
  • 0 Independent Living Programs,
  • 0 Assisted Living Facilities.
