Alaska Office of Children's Services Statistical Information

The Office of Children's Services (OCS) collects data on children and families referred for child protective services and on providers for out-of-home placements.

Statistical information is posted to this page by the 15th of each month in accordance with: Alaska Statutes Sec. 47.05.100, Monthly reports concerning children.

The following data was harvested from the OCS ORCARPT database on March 13, 2023.


Protective Service Reports Screened during February 2023

  • 1,706 Protective Service Reports were screened,
  • 533 Protective Service Reports were screened in (31%)
  • 1,173 Protective Service Reports were screened out

Initial Assessments Completed during February 2023

  • 486 Initial Assessments were completed,
  • 99 Initial Assessments were Substantiated (20%),
  • 387 Initial Assessments were Not Substantiated (includes Closed without a Finding).

Children in Out-of-home care during February 2023

Please note that due to administrative processing, there may be a significant lag for entry of discharge data into ORCA, which may affect reporting accuracy for recent months.

  • 2,781 Children were in Out-of-home care during the month; of these children 1,881 were Alaskan Native/American Indian (68%)
  • 64 children were removed from their home; 41 of these were Alaskan Native/American Indian (64%),
  • 46 children were discharged from Out-of-Home care; 32 of these were Alaskan Native/American Indian (70%)

Providers who were Licensed during February 2023

There were 1,401 licensed homes during all or part of the month, including the following:

  • 658 Non-Child-Specific Foster Homes (99 of which met the standard for the Indian Child Welfare Act),
  • 553 Child-Specific Foster Homes,
  • 97 Non-Child-Specific Foster Group Homes (553 of which met standards for the Indian Child Welfare Act),
  • 23 Child-Specific Foster Group Homes,
  • 16 Child Placement Agencies,
  • 36 Residential Child Care Facilities,
  • 16 Residential Psychiatric Treatment Centers,
  • 2 Maternity Homes,
  • 0 Tribal Foster Homes,
  • 0 Independent Living Programs,
  • 0 Assisted Living Facilities.
