Alaska Office of Children's Services Statistical Information

The Office of Children's Services (OCS) collects data on children and families referred for child protective services and on providers for out-of-home placements.

Statistical information is posted to this page by the 15th of each month in accordance with: Alaska Statutes Sec. 47.05.100, Monthly reports concerning children.

The following data was harvested from the OCS ORCARPT database on November 10, 2022.


Protective Service Reports Screened during October 2022

  • 1,847 Protective Service Reports were screened,
  • 636 Protective Service Reports were screened in (34%)
  • 1,211 Protective Service Reports were screened out (66%)

Initial Assessments Completed during October 2022

  • 468 Initial Assessments were completed,
  • 122 Initial Assessments were Substantiated (26%),
  • 346 Initial Assessments were Not Substantiated (includes Closed without a Finding).

Children in Out-of-home care during October 2022

Please note that due to administrative processing, there may be a significant lag for entry of discharge data into ORCA, which may affect reporting accuracy for recent months.

  • 2,906 Children were in Out-of-home care during the month; of these children 1,960 were Alaskan Native/American Indian (67%)
  • 113 children were removed from their home; 76 of these were Alaskan Native/American Indian (67%),
  • 79 children were discharged from Out-of-Home care; 55 of these were Alaskan Native/American Indian (70%)

Providers who were Licensed during October 2022

There were 1,446 licensed homes during all or part of the month, including the following:

  • 614 Non-Child-Specific Foster Homes (89 of which met the standard for the Indian Child Welfare Act),
  • 596 Child-Specific Foster Homes,
  • 138 Non-Child-Specific Foster Group Homes (569 of which met standards for the Indian Child Welfare Act),
  • 34 Child-Specific Foster Group Homes,
  • 15 Child Placement Agencies,
  • 37 Residential Child Care Facilities,
  • 10 Residential Psychiatric Treatment Centers,
  • 2 Maternity Homes,
  • 0 Tribal Foster Homes,
  • 0 Independent Living Programs,
  • 0 Assisted Living Facilities.
