Alaska Office of Children's Services Statistical Information

The Office of Children's Services (OCS) collects data on children and families referred for child protective services and on providers for out-of-home placements.

Statistical information is posted to this page by the 15th of each month in accordance with: Alaska Statutes Sec. 47.05.100, Monthly reports concerning children.

The following data was harvested from the OCS ORCARPT database on September 12, 2023.


Protective Service Reports Screened during August 2023

  • 1,629 Protective Service Reports were screened,
  • 507 Protective Service Reports were screened in (31%)
  • 1,122 Protective Service Reports were screened out

Initial Assessments Completed during August 2023

  • 462 Initial Assessments were completed,
  • 141 Initial Assessments were Substantiated (31%),
  • 321 Initial Assessments were Not Substantiated (includes Closed without a Finding).

Children in Out-of-home care during August 2023

Please note that due to administrative processing, there may be a significant lag for entry of discharge data into ORCA, which may affect reporting accuracy for recent months.

  • 2,689 Children were in Out-of-home care during the month; of these children 1,885 were Alaskan Native/American Indian (70%)
  • 104 children were removed from their home; 74 of these were Alaskan Native/American Indian (71%),
  • 85 children were discharged from Out-of-Home care; 62 of these were Alaskan Native/American Indian (73%)

Providers who were Licensed during August 2023

There were 1,302 licensed homes during all or part of the month, including the following:

  • 627 Non-Child-Specific Foster Homes (90 of which met the standard for the Indian Child Welfare Act),
  • 530 Child-Specific Foster Homes,
  • 55 Non-Child-Specific Foster Group Homes (5 of which met standards for the Indian Child Welfare Act),
  • 11 Child-Specific Foster Group Homes,
  • 15 Child Placement Agencies,
  • 36 Residential Child Care Facilities,
  • 26 Residential Psychiatric Treatment Centers,
  • 2 Maternity Homes,
  • 0 Tribal Foster Homes,
  • 0 Independent Living Programs,
  • 0 Assisted Living Facilities.
