Ketchikan Pioneer Home

Overview

The Ketchikan Pioneer Home (KPH) opened its doors to older Alaskans in November 1981 and has been providing compassionate care to elders ever since. Today the Home serves 45 elders, employs a variety of passionate staff, and has a core group of dedicated and loyal volunteers. The building is conveniently located at the base of Alder park and is just across the street from the Alaska Marine Highway terminal and the main post office in Ketchikan.

The KPH became registered as an Eden Home in 1999 and subscribes to the philosophy that an elder’s care plan should maximize independence and should be individualized for that particular person. Meaningful activities, relationships that provide a real sense of companionship, and compassionate care are hallmarks of life at the KPH.

What sets us apart? When walking through the front doors of our Home we hope you will notice the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere while stopping to enjoy the slideshow of our favorite photos. You may be greeted by one of our daily pet volunteers or even a resident pet that lives here. The fresh baked pastries and soups made from scratch are smells that are regularly noted in feedback from visitors, and don’t be surprised if you hear children laughing as you walk through our halls. In 2004 the KPH Resident Council agreed to partner with the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District to provide classroom space for one preschool class. The experiment was such a resounding success that the Resident Council has continued to extend an invitation every year since then. The elders enjoy the many intergenerational activities each day and the children provide an endless supply of hugs and smiles.
