Alaska Tribal Child Welfare Compact

Blanket toss: Screencap from the 2017 The Alaska Tribal Child Welfare Compact video

The Alaska Tribal Child Welfare Compact is a government-to-government agreement between the State of Alaska and participating Alaska Native Tribes and Tribal organizations. It affirms Tribal sovereignty in the delivery of child welfare services and seeks to enhance outcomes for Alaska Native children through culturally appropriate, community-based care.

Article 6 supports the legal authority of the Alaska Tribal Child Welfare Compact by affirming that federal laws and treaties (including those recognizing Tribal sovereignty and child welfare rights) override conflicting state laws. This gives legitimacy and strength to the Compact's goal of transferring child welfare authority to Alaska Native Tribes.
